Introduction to Commercial Diving Careers Day

Try a dive in surface supplied diving gear so you can get a taste of commercial diving

1 day Introductory to Commercial Diving Careers Day: £75*

We offer an ‘Introduction to Commercial Diving Careers’ day for prospective students who want to ‘get a feel’ for commercial diving, where you will do a practice dive in full commercial diving gear.

You’ll dive in surface supplied diving gear in our 1.5million litre onshore dive tank complex. During the dive, you’ll be given a task to do in the water so you can get an idea of what it’s really like to work under the water.

You’ll also receive a tour of our facilities, including our various dive stations and our saturation diving barge. This is a great opportunity to talk to our industry experienced instructors about your career in commercial diving, and to see first-hand the diving operations and equipment you’ll be using when you’re on the course. Each introductory day is limited to a maximum of 8 students per day.

The Introductory Day costs just £75* and is a great way to fully appreciate and understand what’s involved in your new career, before taking the next step and training to be a commercial diver.

*This is refundable against your course fees if you subsequently book into a course.

Case Study

Alistair BradyCommercial Diver Alistair Brady

Alistair Brady was brought up in London, and on leaving school wondered between jobs like retail and customer service, but didn’t last as ‘I got bored and wanted to do something more motivational and practical.’

Working internationally

‘I heard about The Underwater Centre through friends who were divers. I completed the Standard Career Package in August 2011 – I wanted to get the HSE diving certification as it’s recognised worldwide. I have British and Nigerian dual nationality so wanted to be able to work anywhere.

After qualifying from The Underwater Centre I then began working with Subsea Inspection Services Nigeria Ltd offshore on various jobs, such as Jack up rig inspections, drill ship inspections and Riser Inspections for platforms and FPSO’s.’

Pros and cons of commercial diving

‘The main attraction of commercial diving was the money, followed closely second by the drive to learn more and build my intelligence within the oil and gas sector. Since I started recreational diving I always thought it would be amazing to earn money doing something I enjoyed, which also helped push me to look for work within the subsea sector. I was looking for physical and practical work, where I would be working outdoors. I wanted a job where I could look back at the end of each project to see what I had accomplished. I’m now working as a 3.2U Inspection Diver, topside NDT (Non Destructive Testing) Inspector and Diver Medic Technician (DMT).

‘There is of course a downside to commercial diving, I don’t enjoy spending time away from my loved ones, however I’m able to make enough money to live comfortably, and I enjoy constantly meeting new faces and building new contacts, as well as constantly learning new things while on the job.’

Advice for entering the industry

Commercial Diver Alistair Brady 2‘If you’re thinking of a career in the subsea industry I would definitely recommend it. There is a wide range of opportunities and jobs available, depending on what you would prefer, ranging from ROV pilot techs, to saturation divers, to diver medics or life support technicians.

‘Could you make it as a commercial diver? If you are physically able to dive and could handle roughly 2-6 weeks away from home, then yes. You could earn roughly £300 a day as an offshore air diver, and that increases depending on extra qualifications held, like the CSWIP 3.1U, DMT, Welding & Burning, Rigging and Inspection report writing skills.

‘It can be hard at first finding a job offshore, as companies prefer divers with experience. Inshore work would be the best place to start. The Underwater Centre does help to promote newly qualified divers to find work within their area by giving their CVs to reputable companies. Some inshore companies do cater for newly qualified divers to help build their experience and knowledge. There are also many websites which advertise offshore work which can help boost the chances of a diver looking for work.’

Training at The Underwater Centre

‘It was an amazing experience to learn at the Centre in Fort William. The staff were very friendly and took the time to explain anything I didn’t understand. The main things I learnt from during my course, which I think will help me progress are; how to dive safely, how to tie knots, how to setup the diving equipment and how to log dives.

‘Another bonus was that the accommodation being so conveniently placed close to the dive sites. 3 meals were also provided daily so I didn’t need to worry about cooking for myself!’
